Dr. Santa Ono named as 15th President and Vice-Chancellor of UBC

Policy Challenge@Ottawa
MPPGA students are in Ottawa this week, designing a policy toolkit in a Policy Studio at the Central Innovation Hub, part of the Privy Council Office, and meeting with policy practitioners. One student team has begun by conducting a SWOT analysis – a structured planning method used to evaluate strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
International Policy Ideas Challenge 2016
Global Affairs Canada has announced the International Policy Ideas Challenge, designed to identify concrete innovative solutions to emerging international policy challenges by drawing on the network of talented graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in Canada. The top 10 entries will be invited to pitch their proposal virtually to a jury. The deadline is March 31.

Inequality explained: the trouble with pharmaceutical patents
In this OpenCanada article, UBC graduate students, including MPPGA’s very own Andrés Delgado and Fernando Rodríguez, argue that although patents encourage development of new drugs by ensuring that pharmaceutical companies have intellectual property rights on their products, they are not effective in stimulating pharmaceutical innovation, nor are a sustainable means of delivering medicines to poorer countries.

Canada’s Minister of International Trade, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, visited UBC on Jan. 12 to discuss the progress of the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) deal. The Minister said the Liberal government is still at the stage of understanding the deal, but ensured that free trade and integrating Canada into the global economy will always be their priority.

MPPGA Co-operative Education Pilot Program
The MPPGA Co-operative Education Pilot Program (Co-op) allows MPPGA graduate students to acquire practical, paid work experience specific to policy-related professions as a compliment to their classroom learning. Work placements occur during the summer between the first and second years of the MPPGA program. Co-op graduates will be well prepared, academically and professionally, for their future careers.
The Lind Initiative brings leading U.S. scholars to UBC
Joseph Stiglitz, the renowned economist, professor and author, will be at UBC in September and November, 2015 as part of the new Lind Initiative in U.S. Studies. This program, led by the Liu Institute for Global Issues, brings prominent academics to UBC to conduct research and share ideas with students, faculty and the wider community.
The African Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship Program Now Open
The ALT Program, delivered by The Canadian Bureau for International Education and with The Institute of Public Administration of Canada, will grant scholarships to young African women and men to pursue a Master’s degree in public administration, public policy or public finances.
